USA South Sets New Bar!

When Shelby Joslin started shopping for a club to supplement her volleyball experience at Evangelical Christian School two years ago, it didn't take long for her to choose USA South.

"They had the best record, the best coaching and the best opportunity for me to get into a college program," said Joslin, 15.And while plenty of clubs can claim to play great volleyball in Southwest Florida, no organization played it better this year than the 13-year-old USA South.

LITTLE SPIKER MINI-CLUB LEAGUE!

NVA and USA South Volleyball have partnered to create a competitive Middle School League in SW Florida. This league will be the foundation of youth volleyball training to prepare those players interested in participating in club and/or High School volleyball. This program will be supplemental to the current Middle School program, allowing those interested to receive club level coaching through mini-club. As the sport of Volleyball grows at the National level, we feel that athletes in the area need to be provided better training at younger ages and we anticipate Little Spiker becoming the premier youth volleyball league in SW Florida.

Re: New USAV Membership and Tryout Guidelines

Date: July 31, 2009

This is an official announcement from USA South Volleyball in response to the new USAV membership dates and tryout information for Girl’s club volleyball. As the leader in SW Florida for providing the top volleyball training for student athletes, we spent a great deal of time addressing and researching the effects these changes would have on the player, the parents and families of players, and the club.
In addition, we discussed this change with 5 of the top college coaches in Florida, the USA South coaching staff, the P.A.C. Representatives and representatives from other club programs. We undertook this research and deliberation because it is important to all of us that we make a decision that puts the athlete and her development before any parent/club priority or agenda.  This philosophy has been and will continue to be at the core of all of our decisions.
The results of this research lead us to all agree on the following philosophies:

  • All High School Athletes SHOULD NOT be participating in club tryouts, practices, or activities until High School season has concluded.
  • Middle School player’s could benefit from beginning club activities at an earlier date to provide more time to develop the necessary skills, prior to the traditional club tryouts, practices, and tournaments.

The two philosophies described above were painstakingly arrived at with the incorporation of the following:

  • All 5 college coaches consulted felt that this would result in negative effects in regard to the student athlete’s development, both mentally and physically, especially at the older age groups.
  • High School coaches who also coach club teams would likely encounter conflict of interest challenges when coaching high school teams consisting of players who traditionally play for a variety of clubs.  Especially in regards to implied (if not explicit) pressure on team tryouts and playing time.
  • USA South Volleyball believes strongly in supporting the high school coaches’ adherence to the highest standards of integrity and objectivity when it comes to their High School programs.
  • Conducting the club tryouts and commitments concurrently with the ongoing high school team season could place the girl’s in compromising positions with their high school teammates if they chose to play at different clubs.
  • It is our position that creating an environment with the potential to create a division on high school teams because of a concurrently running club program could lead to finger pointing and negatively impact a high school team’s unity.
  • It is USA South Volleyball’s position that in the fall these student athletes should be provided a framework that encourages them to focus on their high school team work and their school work.
  • USA South volleyball desires to find a healthy balance that provides both the level of training and competition as well as the valuable mental and physical break from club volleyball that is needed in order to compete at the highest level possible during each respective season.
  • Due to the level of talent and coaching in the USA South Volleyball Club, many of our teams compete well in to the month of June or July, which already leaves them very little recovery and family time.
  • Every year we have players who do not make one of our teams and they work hard to develop their skills and come back the next season. These 3 months of additional training and playing experience garnered during a high school season can provide the time and progress that could enable a young athlete to make the club team.
  • It is USA South Volleyball Club’s opinion that having tryouts in August could unfairly penalize these players who are in the midst of rapid development during the high school season, and could materially alter their opportunities to attain their full potential.

In Summary, USA South supports and respects the athletes and coaches who participate in High School Volleyball.  In keeping with the spirit of putting the welfare of the student athletes ahead of the club’s size or finances, USA South Volleyball is committed to honoring and supporting these athletes and our areas high school volleyball programs.   We believe that the best way to do this is to allow them to focus fully on their high school programs and then allow them to try out for every program in our area to find the best fit for them.
Please remember that September 1st is the first day USAV players are allowed to sign the commitment form. This does NOT mean they must sign it on September 1st. USAV players can sign the form any day after September 1st.  USA South Volleyball is recommending that commitment to any program be reserved for after the high school season to remove any possible impression of conflict of interest and/or undue pressure on the student athletes.
USA South will be holding an informational meeting on Saturday, August 22nd for all age groups to answer any questions in regards to the upcoming season and USA South programs. We will be releasing the 2010 program as well as the information meeting details within the next week.
Sincerely,

Landon Thomas and the USA South Volleyball Staff

Ciara Brown Makes Verbal Commitment!

On Tuesday, June 23, Ciara verbally committed to Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va after making her unofficial visit. To: All Club Players and Parents of SW Florida
The USAV Florida Region has made some changes to the Girls USAV Membership dates and tryout guidelines. 4) For players who are not participating on JV or Varsity teams, club’s can hold tryouts on any day after September 1st. (This is consistent with the rules in the past)
Please understand you are not required to sign the commitment form on September 1st.

JO's 17 National Team

USA South 17N Players, Parents, and Coaches,

Nice job this past week in Miami Beach and all season long.  What a memorable club season and club team.  Thanks to everyone.  I have attached the pictures that I took at the tournament.

The competition at JOs was tough, and the teams were evenly matched.  Five of our eight matches required three games!  Unfortunately, our team could not get a break or a ball to bounce our way in those tough matches.  So in the first 5 matches, we won 1 and lost 4.  But we stormed back in the next 5 matches of the tournament and won 4 and lost 1.
In case you didn't know, we did lose to the team (Cleveland) that won the whole tournament, and we pushed Cleveland to the brink in a 25-23 loss in game-1 of the match.  Our team also lost to the team that came in third place overall (Austin, Texas), and in that match, we lost 2-1 in a 3-game match that could have went either way.

Overall, our team results were:  Matches: Won-5 Lost-5;  Games: Won-14 Lost-11.  Four of the five match losses went to 3-games.

Here's our results from the website:

2009 PlyoCity Results!

2009 was the first season that USA South used the PlyoCity program. This program was implemented to increase players durability during tournaments and increase their vertical jumps and quickness. As you will see from the results we feel this program was a success in accomplishing our goals of improving the performance of our players. As a club in whole (based on those who did 2 tests) the players averaged an increase in their Block Jump of 2.8" and an increase in their Approach Jump of 2.6". Of course, just like everything else, you get out what you put in and some of those realized greater increases than others. You can click on the links below to view the test results for each team.

NEW ADDITIONS TO THE COACHING STAFF

USA South continues to improve their coaching staff by adding two highly qualified coaches. USA South is happy to announce that FGCU Assistant Fernanda Nelson and Eastern Kentucky University All-American setter Kelly Jennings will be joining the USA South staff for the 2008-2009 season. Both Fernanda and Kelly bring impressive playing and coaching experience which will greatly improve out individual training sessions for setters and liberos as well as help bring new training and offensive systems to our team practices.

A native of Brazil, Nelson has 13 years of playing experience in her native country. In 1997, she was named the top setter in Brazil. She came to National American in 2000 as a freshman and immediately made an impact, earning second team All-American (NAIA) honors during her rookie season. She helped lead NAU to a national championship in 2002 and by the end of her collegiate career, she was a three-time 1st team All-American selection and twice named the National Player of the Year (2001, 2003). In December Fernanda will be inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame. Click here for more information

Kelly Jennings grew up playing volleyball in Illinois and developing her skills at Sky High Volleyball Club. She led her high school team to a 2003 6A State Championship as well as being selected for the All-Conference and All- Area teams. Kelly then became an instant star at Eastern Kentucky University as a four year starting setter. She is currently the All-time Ohio Valley Conference assist leader at 5,543 assists and holds the EKU single season assist record and career assist record. In 2004 she ranked in the top 35 setters in the Nation and in 2005 was in the top 25! Kelly will be a great young asset to our club.
